Aomori grows more apples than anywhere else in Japan. Here's how to actually go apple picking there — where to go, when to visit, and what a real farm visit looks like.
If you've ever eaten a Japanese apple, there's a good chance it came from Aomori. The prefecture produces around half of Japan's entire apple harvest, and the growing conditions here — cold winters, a long growing season, and generations of careful cultivation — are why Aomori apples are famous for being so crisp and sweet.
For visitors, that also means Aomori is the best place in Japan to actually go apple picking, rather than just buying apples at a shop. Most working orchards are family-run, tucked into the countryside around Hirosaki, and many welcome visitors for a hands-on picking experience rather than just selling wholesale.
The best time to visit depends on what you're after: August has the earliest varieties, September brings sweet, refreshing apples, October is peak season with the widest variety on the trees, and November offers the last, most concentrated late-season apples. September and October are generally the sweet spot for a first visit.
A typical apple-picking visit runs 60–90 minutes: a welcome from the farmer, a walk through the orchard, a lesson on the different varieties, picking your own apples straight from the tree, a tasting, and time for photos before you take your apples home. Unlike a quick photo-stop, it's a real look at how Japanese farming families work — many orchards, like Kudo Farm in Hirosaki, have been growing apples for well over a century.
If you're planning a Hirosaki visit, apple picking pairs naturally with a half-day itinerary: Hirosaki Castle in the morning, lunch in town, then an orchard visit in the afternoon. Most farms are only about 10 minutes from JR Hirosaki Station by car or taxi, so it's easy to fit in without a rental car.
