Hirosaki packs a castle, a historic old town, and Japan's best apple orchards into a single, easy day trip. Here's how to fit it all in without a rental car.
Hirosaki is one of the most underrated day trips in Tohoku — a compact castle town where you can go from feudal-era architecture to a working apple orchard in about the same time it takes to get lunch in between.
Start the morning at Hirosaki Castle, one of Japan's original wooden castle keeps, surrounded by a park that's famous for cherry blossoms in spring and quietly beautiful the rest of the year too. A couple of hours is enough to walk the grounds and moats at an easy pace.
From the castle, it's a short trip into central Hirosaki for lunch — the town has a good number of local restaurants near the castle park, so there's no need to plan far ahead.
In the afternoon, head about 10 minutes by car or taxi to one of the family-run apple orchards on the edge of town, like Kudo Farm. It's a genuinely different pace from the morning: a walk through the trees, picking your own apples, meeting the farmer, and tasting apples that were on the tree an hour earlier.
The whole loop — castle, lunch, orchard — fits comfortably into a single day without a rental car, since everything sits within about 10-15 minutes of JR Hirosaki Station. If you're building a Tohoku itinerary and only have one day to spend in Hirosaki, this combination covers the city's two biggest draws without feeling rushed.
